Philly's Flygirrl - Stacey Wilson

“Some look at things that are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?” This is the George Bernard Shaw quote on the home page of her website, www.flygirrl.com. It describes the tenacity of Stacey explicitly. Stacey is an event planner and artist, with a professional drive that is infectious. In art & business, she. goes. hard. Meet Stacey and her work.

LOTA&C Q&A with STACEY WILSON

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF.
my name is stacey wilson but most also know me as, flygirrl.

WHAT DO YOU CREATE?
anything i want!! lol but i'm mostly known for creating events, art + graphic design

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON YOUR CREATIVE PATH?
i went to college in 1995 for graphic design. i went to a college on 11th + market (in Philly) at the time, called hussian school of art. the school only has 2 majors - designers or illustrators. but all 4 years of college, you learned every type of art and only focused on your major your senior year. so, although i went for design, i became an illustrator as well.

after school, i didn't paint or or anything i just did alot of design work for various industry folks at the time.. then, in 2001 started squarebiz/tastytreats with questlove and yameen allworld, had my first art exhibit and have been doing it all ever since.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
i have books full of ideas and concepts for parties, paintings and everything inbetween. everything inspires me to create. music, art, dj's, fashion, nature, people, and really just having the freedom to do anything i want. that really inspires me. there isn't anything stopping me from creating exactly what i want.. lol, well, maybe with the exception of a lack of funds.. but usually i find a way...

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A LIVING BEING YOUR AUTHENTIC, CREATIVE SELF?
after college i worked at a few places that help build my managerial/promotional/branding experience. i think the fact that i did that was so beneficial to how i can survive on being creative. that and having drive.. you must have drive! because for quite a while, as a freelancer, you have to find your own work. they don't just knock on your door from day one. so, i have spent many years building my network, maintaining relationships, promoting and creating!

i think alot of artists are missing that part. they are such phenomenal artists yet don't know how to get themselves out there. luckily, i can do that for myself.

WHAT NEW PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
event wise - i have a ton of upcoming dj's each month gearing towards our 10 year anniversary at tastytreats saturday nights @ fluid. our next guests are da beatminerz on 8/21.. i also have another event that is part of a series of intimate, live format discussions at warmdaddy's called, inside the studio. our special guest this session on sunday september 19 is marsha ambrosius.

art wise - i am always working, vending and exhibiting. on the 28th, you can find me painting live in a battle at the arts garage.

as for everything else, there is always stuff in the works.. you just have to keep up with me :) (check website or email me to be added to email list)
